Your main task is to review each immigrant and return citizen’s passports and other essential paperwork against an ever-growing list of rules with the help of plenty of tools and guides. Furthermore, you also have to allow the people who fulfill proper paperwork requirements and reject those who don’t have proper documents.

This game was first released on Microsoft Windows and OS X on 8 August 2013. On 12 February 2014, the users of Linux were able to play the game. On 12 December 2014, this game was released for the users of iOS.


The gameplay of Papers Please, mainly focuses on the life of an immigration officer, whose duty is at the border checkpoint for the fictional country of Arstotzka. In-game, you experience the year 1982. It is when the Arstotzka has recently ended a 6 years-long war with the neighboring country Kolechia. However, the political tension between both the countries and other neighboring countries remains high.

In-game, you have to control the huge flow of people entering the Arstotzka side of Grestin from Kolechia. You have to check all the essential documents of these people because, among the throngs of immigrants, visitors, and people coming for work in Arstotzka, there are also some hidden smugglers, spies, and terrorists.

You have to discover these types of people and arrest them, using the documents provided by them and the Ministry of Admissions’s primitive inspection, search, and fingerprint systems. It is totally up to you to decide who can enter Arstotzka and who will be arrested.

For every game day, you get some rules on what documents are needed and conditions to permit or deny entry. It will become more difficult with the progress of the game. One by one, people come to the checkpoint and give their documents to you. As an immigration officer, it is your responsibility to use plenty of tools to review the document and make sure that it is in order.
